Does AI-Written Copy Actually Hurt Your Email Deliverability?

We send cold outreach emails at Audit&Fix. Thousands of them. So when the conversation around AI-generated content and spam filters started heating up, we didn't just read the articles – we dug into the research ourselves. We had to. Our deliverability is our livelihood.

The short answer: no email provider has a filter that asks "was this written by AI?" and bins it. But that's not the whole story. Not even close.

The Real Problem Isn't an "AI Detector"

Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook don't run your email through some version of GPTZero before deciding whether to deliver it. There's no checkbox in their spam engine labelled "is_ai_generated". That's the good news.

The bad news is that AI-written content happens to trigger existing spam signals harder than human-written content does. Not because the providers are looking for AI specifically, but because AI produces patterns that spam filters have been catching for years.

Think about it. Spam has always been templated, formulaic, repetitive and high-volume. AI content, used carelessly, is all of those things too. The filters don't need to know it's AI. They just see content that looks like every other piece of bulk mail they've been trained to flag.

Five AI Patterns That Trip Spam Filters

We looked at what specifically makes AI-generated emails more likely to land in spam. These are the patterns that came up consistently across our research and our own sending data.

1. Formulaic openers

"I hope this email finds you well." "I came across your company and was impressed by…" "I noticed that your business…"

You've received these emails. Hundreds of them. So have the spam filters. When the first sentence of your email matches a pattern seen in millions of other emails, you're already starting from behind. AI defaults to these openers because they're the most statistically common way to start a professional email – which is exactly why they're a red flag.

2. Uniform sentence structure

AI tends to produce sentences of similar length with similar clause density. Subject-verb-object. Qualifier. Another sentence of the same shape. It's grammatically perfect and rhythmically dead. Human writing is messy – short punchy fragments mixed with longer meandering thoughts. Spam filters can measure this uniformity, and high uniformity correlates with bulk sending.

3. High imperative verb density

"Check out our platform." "Schedule a call today." "Download our free guide." "Click here to learn more."

AI-generated sales emails tend to stack imperative verbs – commands telling the reader to do something. One CTA is fine. Three or four in a short email is a pattern filters have learned to associate with promotional spam.

4. Template fingerprinting

This is the big one. When you send 500 emails that all follow the same structural template – same paragraph count, same sentence patterns, same word distributions – spam providers can detect the template even if the surface-level words change. It's like a fingerprint. AI using the same prompt will produce structurally identical emails even when the content varies. At scale, that fingerprint becomes visible to the filter.

5. Low linguistic entropy

Linguistic entropy is a measure of how predictable your text is. High entropy means surprising, varied language. Low entropy means the next word is easily guessable from the previous ones. AI content tends toward low entropy because the models are literally trained to predict the most likely next word. Spam filters – particularly Google's – use entropy-adjacent signals. Predictable text looks automated, because it usually is.

What the Numbers Actually Show

This isn't theoretical. Here's what we found in published case studies and industry data.

A B2B SaaS company scaled their outreach using AI-generated emails and watched deliverability drop from 96% to 78%. Nearly one in five emails that had been landing in the inbox started going to spam. They hadn't changed their infrastructure, their domain reputation, or their sending volume. The only variable was the content.

Another company went further down the AI rabbit hole with heavily templated content and saw deliverability fall below 50%. Half their emails, gone. After they introduced genuine variation – different structures, different openings, different lengths – deliverability recovered to 88% within a few weeks.

Provider-specific detection varies wildly. In phishing detection research, Yahoo flagged roughly 90% of AI-generated emails as suspicious. Gmail was moderate. Outlook caught only about 4%. So your results depend heavily on where your recipients have their email.

And the broader trend: over 51% of all spam in 2026 is now AI-generated. The filters are adapting fast because they have to. The volume of AI-produced bulk email is enormous and growing, which means the filters are getting better at catching the patterns AI produces.

Infrastructure Still Matters More Than Copy

Here's the part that doesn't get enough attention in the "AI vs spam filters" conversation: your email infrastructure matters far more than your content does.

You can write the most beautifully human, varied, personalised email in history and it'll still land in spam if your technical setup is wrong. Conversely, decent infrastructure can carry mediocre content to the inbox – at least for a while.

The fundamentals haven't changed:

  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC – These authentication records prove you're allowed to send from your domain. Without them, you're fighting with one hand tied behind your back. Setting them up takes 30 minutes and your hosting provider can usually help.
  • Sender reputation – Your domain and IP build a reputation over time based on engagement, complaints and bounces. A new domain blasting 500 emails on day one will get hammered regardless of content quality.
  • Bounce rate under 2% – Sending to dead email addresses tells providers you're not maintaining your list. Verify before you send.
  • Spam complaints under 0.1% – If more than one in a thousand recipients mark you as spam, your reputation degrades quickly. This is where content quality and targeting actually intersect – irrelevant emails get reported.
  • Consistent sending volume – Gradual ramp-up, steady cadence. Spikes in volume are a classic spam signal.

Get these right first. Then worry about whether your copy sounds too AI.

Practical Advice for Small Businesses Using AI

We're not saying don't use AI to help write emails. We use it ourselves. The point is how you use it. Here's what works based on our experience and the research.

Plain text for first touch

Your first email to someone who's never heard of you should be plain text. No HTML templates, no images, no fancy formatting. Plain text emails look personal, and they avoid the template fingerprinting issue entirely. Most email clients render them identically, which means fewer rendering issues too.

Keep it short

Under 80 words for cold outreach. Seriously. Long AI-generated emails give the filters more text to analyse and more patterns to match against. Short emails are harder to fingerprint, faster to read, and statistically more likely to get a reply anyway.

Vary every email

This is non-negotiable if you're sending at any volume. Every email needs to be structurally different from the last one. Different opening line, different paragraph structure, different length. You can use spintax (rotating word and phrase alternatives) or per-recipient generation where AI writes a genuinely unique email each time. But identical templates sent to 200 people will get caught.

Reference something genuinely specific

Not "I noticed your business is doing great things" – that's filler and everyone knows it. Reference a specific Google review they received, a recent blog post they published, a job listing they have open, something about their actual suburb or neighbourhood. Real specificity is the single strongest signal that an email was written by a human for a specific person.

One soft CTA

One question. One next step. Not "schedule a call, visit our website, download our guide and follow us on LinkedIn." Stack multiple imperatives and you sound like a marketing bot – because that's exactly what most marketing bots do. Ask one question. Make it easy to say yes or no.

Kill the classic AI openers

Ban these from your templates entirely: "I hope this email finds you well." "I came across your company." "I was impressed by your website." "I wanted to reach out because." These are the AI equivalent of a spam fingerprint. If your email starts with any of these, a significant percentage of recipients will delete it before finishing the first sentence – and the filters know that.

The Takeaway

AI-written email copy doesn't trigger some secret "AI detector" at Gmail or Yahoo. But it does produce patterns – uniformity, predictability, formulaic phrasing, template fingerprints – that existing spam filters have been catching for years. The filters don't care whether a human or a model wrote the email. They care whether it looks like bulk mail. And default AI output, used without thought, looks exactly like bulk mail.

Fix your infrastructure first. Then make your AI-assisted emails short, varied, specific and genuinely useful to the person receiving them. That's it. There's no trick beyond doing the basics properly and not being lazy about it.
